Concrete design has become an increasingly fashionable movement, especially in Europe. Many designers and architects now make extensive use of the concrete concept in their projects. These designs favour concrete in its purest and most natural form, with an approach that preserves simplicity and highlights the structure rather than concealing it. In recent years, as grey tones have also grown in popularity, accessories and objects in these shades have become key elements in the design of homes and offices. Perhaps because they are so compatible with Minimalism, these designs have become especially popular.
So, what is Minimalism?
At its simplest, minimalism means owning fewer things, but in reality it is much more than that. One of its most interesting perspectives is the idea of removing unnecessary distractions so that the things we own and value most can stand out. We are exposed to around 5,000 advertisements every day, all competing constantly for our attention. Minimalism can also mean rejecting this noise and focusing on the smaller number of things that genuinely matter to you. Contrary to popular belief, minimalism is not only for people who enjoy sparse spaces; it can also be followed by people who love lively, layered environments. The word derives from the French “minimum” and can be understood as “the least amount necessary for something”. Deciding what should be reduced is the philosophical part. Avoid accumulating unnecessary objects. The things you keep because “I may use it one day” are often never used, and having more things does not automatically make a space more beautiful. In a minimalist bedroom, for example, you might choose simple modern furniture and wall colours dominated by neutral tones. For restful sleep, an uncluttered, spacious arrangement with only as much furniture as necessary is enough. A light-grey wall, a reasonably sized bed, a glossy white wardrobe and a single dark rug can create a minimalist bedroom.
As well as referring to today’s interest in eco-consciousness and natural living, concrete can be a strong and functional element for both interiors and exteriors.
What should minimalist decoration look like?
Decoration means something different to everyone. For us, anything that is well considered, practical and visually pleasing can be good design — although, naturally, we have a particular preference for designs that include concrete. You may not know where to begin, and it may even become part of a wider lifestyle choice, but minimalist decoration can certainly help a space feel calmer and more considered.
